Weaving with Watercolors with Shaine Drake

TUESDAY, MARCH 18, 6 - 8pm PST
This is an in-person workshop at CfM Art Room:
4035 Judah St, San Francisco, next door to our shop!
In this workshop, we'll transform abstract watercolor paintings of our making into dimensional, woven works of art! Using both classic and non-conventional weaving techniques (it’s always lovely meditative repetition regardless), we’ll not only explore the mixing and layering of watercolors on paper, but how, when pieced apart and re-formed, they expose hidden patterns and create texture upon texture. We’ll focus on watercolor painting + weaving and how these two seemingly disparate practices can work so beautifully together. Plus, after this session you’ll know the basics of weaving with yarn as well: weave structures, terminology, etc! You're also more than welcome to bring paintings you previously worked on and maybe weren't satisfied with, which you can rework into a weaving. What a way to reuse and recycle!
MATERIALS NEEDED
These are the supplies you'll need to bring for class—feel free to supplement this list with other options you love or have on hand!
- Watercolor paints – It’s best to start with a palette of 3-5 colors so that they all really pop within the weaving
- Watercolor paper – A pad or block of cold press paper, or individual sheets (around 8"x10" recommended)
- Scratch paper similar in size to the watercolor paper, for trying out weaving before using our painted piece
- Mixing palette
- Brushes – We recommend size 8 and above
- Tape – Artist's or Nichiban masking tape, or Scotch, Washi...any kind you have on hand
- Scissors
- Optional – A ruler + a black or colored piece of paper to use along with the scratch paper when making our weaving sample
If you'd like to purchase supplies from our shop, you can order online and select in-store pickup, or shop in person before class. Shop hours are 11am-6pm daily; please plan ahead if you're picking up supplies! Instructors will not have access to the shop when we're closed.
ABOUT INSTRUCTOR
Shaine was the second person we ever hired and has been our right-hand person ever since. She's watched us go from a young, baby shop, to a teenage watercolor brand, to who we are today, overseeing all aspects of the biz with her careful attention to detail and eye for color. Shaine is a multi-media marbler and weaver and has been teaching workshops for years with us here and around the Bay Area.
