A deep and warm earth color, similar to a deep scarlet, Venetian Red is opaque and lightfast with a smooth and consistent texture.
This pigment comes from the southern Italian Alps, which is a rich source of very old earth pigments preserved by overlapping volcanic rock. It consists almost completely of ferric oxide derived from hematite, a crystalline-structured mineral form of iron(lll) oxide. Venetian Red was a color widely used in Italian Renaissance painting beginning in the 14th century.
All of our watercolors handmade in our shop using the highest quality earth and synthetic pigments and natural watercolor binding medium made from gum arabic (sap from acacia trees), honey, glycerine and distilled water.
