This warm, earthy red is similar to deep scarlet, and is opaque, smooth and lightfast. The pigment is derived from hematite, a crystalline-structured mineral form of iron(lll) oxide from the southern Italian Alps, where it’s been preserved in overlapping volcanic rock. Venetian Red was widely used in Italian Renaissance painting beginning in the 14th century.
