Star Fruit with Melanie Lan

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 10:00am – 12:00pm PT
This is an in-person workshop at CfM Art Room:
4035 Judah St, San Francisco, next door to our shop!
Inside every fruit is the potential for a Big Bang! In this gentle, reflective watercolor workshop, we’ll explore fruits as symbols of abundance and nourishment, and portray them as cosmic portals to the stardust within us all.
In addition to painting fruits and their silhouettes, this class will look at how to paint starry slices of the universe, using a monochromatic palette. Participants are welcome to paint with more than one color, but limiting a piece to a single color and theme often opens up unexpected creative freedoms – encouraging deeper focus, refined expression, and inventive use of contrast, texture, and form.
This is a space for reflection, not perfection. No art experience necessary. Just bring your curiosity and a willingness to grow. Come as you are, and leave a little more nourished.
MATERIALS NEEDED
These are the supplies you'll need to bring for class—feel free to supplement this list with other options you love or have on hand!
-
Watercolor paints – Melanie will be using just one color, blue, but participants are welcome to paint with as many colors as they'd like!
- If you'd also like to work with blue, bring as many blue paints as possible! We'll mix them together to create a hue with depth.
-
Watercolor paper – A pad or block of cold press paper, or individual sheets (8"x10" recommended, but any approximate size will do!)
- Brushes
- White Gouache
- Mixing palette
- Feel free to bring some fruit for fun, but this is optional, as fruit will be provided :)
If you'd like to purchase supplies from our shop, you can order online and select in-store pickup, or shop in person before class. Shop hours are 11am-6pm daily; please plan ahead if you're picking up supplies! Instructors will not have access to the shop when we're closed.
