Spiraling with Melanie Lan

Saturday, October 31, 11:00am - 12:30pm PT.
This is an online workshop held via Zoom.
“The spiral is an attempt at controlling the chaos.” – Louise Bourgeois
You may have noticed that spirals are everywhere: in the curl of a snail shell, the unfurling of an octopus tentacle, the twist of a pea tendril, and the swirling forms of galaxies. In this workshop, we’ll explore the spiral as both a natural phenomenon and a powerful artistic symbol. We’ll look at spirals across time, from ancient 5,000 year old Irish triskeles to the visionary paintings of Hilma af Klint, and the contemporary artworks of Louise Bourgeois.
Today, “spiraling” often means getting caught in a loop of overthinking or catastrophizing. But what if spiraling could be a good thing? Rather than trying to escape the spiral, we’ll use it as a starting point for curiosity and creative flow. Wielding watercolor, we will tap into something larger than ourselves, creating our own spiraling compositions. We will explore where a simple line can take us.
Reference imagery will be provided, and you’re also welcome to bring your own sources of inspiration from nature, art, or everyday life. All levels welcome.
Join Zoom 15 minutes early for an informal meet and greet with the instructor and class participants! Class will begin promptly at 5 minutes past the hour, so everyone has plenty of time to create!
