Pink Pipestone is only currently available in our Natural Earth Palette and Core 36 Palette.

*PLEASE NOTE* The harder minerals in this pigment make it grittier than our other colors!

This uniquely textured, natural earth pigment is semi-transparent and lightfast. It's sourced from a muted, reddish-pink clay found mainly in Minnesota, the Dakotas and Canada, and the blushy pink color comes from iron oxide (hematite) that seeps into the clay beds over time!

Pipestone received its name through its traditional use by Indigenous peoples, who carved ceremonial pipes, known as calumets, with the material. The Sioux tribes held Pipestone sacred, and even in times of war the quarries remained neutral ground. Pipestone is also called Catlinite after artist and author George Catlin, who lived among the Plains Nations in the 1800’s.

All of our watercolors are handmade in our shop using the highest quality earth and synthetic pigments, plus natural watercolor binding medium made from gum arabic (sap from acacia trees), honey, glycerine, distilled water, and a dash of clove oil for freshness!

Half Pans measure ~3/4" x 1/2" x 3/8" and contain ~2ml of paint.

Color Index number not provided by vendor. All of our watercolors conform to ASTM D-4236.
