SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2:00 - 5:00pm PT
This is an in-person workshop at
CfM Art Room:
4035 Judah St, San Francisco, next door to our shop!

Come make oak gall ink with us! Oak gall ink, also known as iron gall ink, is a historic ink used for centuries as the primary writing medium for everything from medieval manuscripts to the Declaration of Independence. It’s created through a chemical reaction between iron and oak galls, small round growths that form when wasps lay eggs in oak branches.

We'll spend the first half of the session making ink and playing with the alchemy of botanical color. In the second half, we'll use our ink to paint still life studies of oak leaves and branches. Everyone will get their own little jar of ink to take home with them at the end of class. All levels are welcome.

MATERIALS NEEDED
These are the supplies you'll need to bring for class—feel free to supplement this list with other options you love or have on hand!

  • A small detail brush (size 0-2)
  • A medium round brush (size 4-6)
  • Assorted paper: can be any type or size. I like to use a mix of watercolor paper and off-white cover stock
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Optional: calligraphy / nib pen, if you’d like to play around with drawing / lettering

If you'd like to purchase supplies from our shop, you can order online and select in-store pickup, or shop in person before class. Shop hours are 11am-6pm daily; please plan ahead if you're picking up supplies! Instructors will not have access to the shop when we're closed.

THINGS TO KNOW
If you need to cancel, please let us know as soon as possible so we can open up your spot! We are only able to refund if we’re notified at least 48 hours prior to the workshop.

Workshop doors open 15 minutes early for all to arrive and get settled. Class will start promptly so everyone has plenty of time to create!

For public transit, both the #18 bus and the N-Judah muni lines stop just at the corner of our block. If you're driving, there is 1-hour parking along Judah St., and unmetered street parking in the surrounding neighborhood. We recommend building in extra time to park for evening and weekend classes!

If you are planning to teach in the future using anything you’ve learned from us, we kindly ask that you credit Case for Making + the individual instructor where applicable.

Thank you so much for taking our workshops!!
