This is an online workshop held via Zoom.
When I come across American artist Joan Mitchell’s abstract oil paintings, I toggle between stepping back to see the bright fields of color and getting as close as I can to see the texture of her brushwork. I recently got to see some of her sketchbooks and loved how she turned to other mediums to capture landscapes, including crayons, markers and watercolors. Drawing inspiration from Mitchell’s work, I explored creating concertina books to create a different sense of scale. In this session, we’ll create our own concertina book with a sheet of watercolor paper and tape. Using Michell’s art as a reference, we’ll fill our books with colorful marks using watercolor and other mark-making materials, such as colored pencils.
Join Zoom 15 minutes early for an informal meet and greet with the instructor and class participants! Class will begin promptly at 5 minutes past the hour, so everyone has plenty of time to create!
