This is an in-person workshop at CfM Art Room:
4035 Judah St, San Francisco, next door to our shop!

In this workshop, we'll explore the art of cyanotypes: an alternative photographic process that blends photography, printmaking, and painting. After a brief introduction to the history of cyanotypes and a look at contemporary artists working in the medium, we'll create our own prints using found and foraged natural objects, and/or paper cutouts. Time permitting, we'll enhance our cyanotypes with watercolor, inspired by the work of contemporary artist Julia Whitney Barnes, who combines these two mediums beautifully.


MATERIALS NEEDED
These are the supplies you'll need to bring for class—feel free to supplement this list with other options you love or have on hand!

  • Watercolor paints
  • Watercolor paper – (100% cotton is best), max size 8x10 inches so it will fit in the water bath!
  • Brushes – a size 4/6 will do, smaller brushes if you want to do more detail painting
  • 2-d materials/objects/nature you want to use for printing (we will also have some 2-d options available)
  • Writing/drawing tools

Optional:

  • sun print paper
  • portable hair dryer
  • black and white photo negatives, medium format or 4x5"

If you'd like to purchase supplies from our shop, you can order online and select in-store pickup, or shop in person before class. Shop hours are 11am-6pm daily; please plan ahead if you're picking up supplies! Instructors will not have access to the shop when we're closed.

ABOUT INSTRUCTOR

Lis discovered Case For Making paints when she was looking for a more compact and portable art medium to use when her oldest son was a toddler. She keeps coming back to case for making friends classes for the wonderful art community that is being built here. She is an elementary art educator by day and spends her free time expanding her own art practice to include painting, ceramics and comics. Her art explores themes related to her daily life, parenthood, teaching, and finding connection in the space between.

If you need to cancel, please let us know as soon as possible so we can open up your spot! We are only able to refund if we’re notified at least 48 hours prior to the workshop.

Workshop doors open 15 minutes early for all to arrive and get settled. Class will start promptly so everyone has plenty of time to create!

For public transit, both the #18 bus and the N-Judah muni lines stop just at the corner of our block. If you're driving, there is 1-hour parking along Judah St., and unmetered street parking in the surrounding neighborhood. We recommend building in extra time to park for evening and weekend classes!
