This is an online workshop held via Zoom.

Drawing from nature is a wonderful way to ground, calm the nervous system, and reconnect with the land. But you don’t have to go on a wilderness expedition to access all that – the plants growing in our homes are just as worthy of attention as those on a mountain. In this course, we’ll cover some basic techniques for drawing in pencil, pen, and watercolor, and learn tips and tricks for how to translate what you see in 3D into a 2D drawing. No expertise necessary! This way of drawing is really about learning how to see with intention – whether or not you “get it right” doesn't matter.

Join Zoom 15 minutes early for an informal meet and greet with the instructor and class participants! Class will begin promptly at 5 minutes past the hour, so everyone has plenty of time to create!

SUGGESTED MATERIALS
These guidelines are here to help you gather supplies from home—feel free to use alternate options you love or have on hand!

  • Watercolor paints – Sam likes to work with earth tones, but any mix of warm and cool will do. Neons are welcome too!
  • Watercolor paper
  • Brushes 2/4/6 round, plus (optional) a flat or chisel shape
  • Cup of Water
  • Mixing palette
  • Studio Cloth or Paper Towel
  • Pencil + eraser
  • Scrap paper to swatch paints and warm up
  • at least one waterproof drawing pen, like Micron (recommended size: 005, 01, or 02); bring other sizes too if you want to experiment!

He works in all kinds of media, always prioritizing how these disparate methods can come together elegantly to elicit a meaningful, emotionally rich experience. His work deals with empathy, mythology, and the intricacies of our human perception.

Workshop recordings are sent automatically the day after class to everyone who paid for a spot, and are available for 30 days after the date of the workshop.

If you need to cancel, please let us know as soon as possible so we can open up your spot! We are only able to refund if we’re notified at least 48 hours prior to the workshop.
