THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 6:30 - 8:30pm PT
This is an in-person workshop that will be held outside at
CfM Art Room:
4035 Judah St, San Francisco, next door to our shop!

This workshop will focus on a few basics of having and using gouache, I will show how I use gouache, we will touch on some basics around what sets it apart from watercolor, how to build a palette using honey and a watercolor tin and then we will work on paintings using a still life that will be softly lit either inside or outside in the backyard with the changing evening light to work on layering and color mixing.

I will provide headlamps should we need them, and have some instructional sheets/worksheets for you to use in class and take home. We will discuss different methods for recording what you are seeing or filling a page and then I will be there with you to answer questions and talk about different aspects of painting with gouache!

MATERIALS NEEDED
These are the supplies you'll need to bring for class—feel free to supplement this list with other options you love or have on hand!

  • Watercolor Sketchbook- any one that you have, I like handbook or moleskine but there are a lot of options out there
  • Gouache (Lindsay will be using traditional designers gouache and not acryla gouache) I prefer tubes of Holbein or M. Graham in the following colors:
    • Titanium White, Shades (choose one: black, payne's grey or sepia) Burnt Umber or Burnt Sienna, 2 different tubes each of Red, Yellow and Blue (like lemon yellow and yellow ochre)
  • Brushes Whatever you have is great- I like having a size 10, 6, 4 and 1 round and maybe a 1 inch flat
  • Eraser/sharpener/pencil
  • Snack/water
  • Comfortable/ warm clothing that can get messy- please do not just wear a sweatshirt- if we decide to work outside you will regret not wearing layers and a jacket.

If you'd like to purchase supplies from our shop, you can order online and select in-store pickup, or shop in person before class. Shop hours are 11am-6pm daily; please plan ahead if you're picking up supplies! Instructors will not have access to the shop when we're closed.
