Dualities: An exploration of contrast and composition in watercolor painting. This class will examine the dynamic relationship between opposing visual elements, drawing inspiration from the complex balance found in both art and life. We will learn to harmonize the interplay of light and dark values, warm and cool colors, soft and crisp brushwork, order, and chaos. Throughout the course, we will discuss the parallels between artistic expression and the dualities inherent in nature, allowing ourselves as both painter and viewer to better navigate the worlds we create and inhabit. From the tranquility of minimal landscapes to the untethered energy of abstractions, we will eagerly embrace the full spectrum of possibilities that lie between.

Join zoom 15 minutes (4:45pm) early for an informal meet and greet with the instructor and other class participants! Session instructions will begin promptly at 5:05pm PT so that everyone has plenty of time to join!

  • Your favorite watercolors; as few or many as you are comfortable using at once.
  • One or more large brushes (flat 1" is my preferred)
  • Any other brushes you like to work with (round 12, 8, 4, 1 etc)
  • 4+ sheets of watercolor paper, around 6"x5" (no wider than 10"; Arches cold press 100% cotton 140lb preferred)
  • Tape for edges (3m scotch magic tape works great)

Dave Muller has been a friend and an inspiration to our shop since before we even existed. He is a staple in our Outer Sunset neighborhood as an artist and fellow business owner. Dave has a way of making art that is both incredibly free, yet very detailed and precise—which creates a beautiful balance especially while working with watercolor. Dave's studio is just a block away from us and we always love to see what he is working on—we’re so excited to learn from him here!

All workshops are recorded and the replay will be automatically available the day after class to everyone who paid for a spot! The link to the recording will expire 30 days after the date of the workshop.
