SATURDAY, MAY 3, 10:00am - 1:00pm PT
This is an in-person workshop that will be held outside at
CfM Art Room:
4035 Judah St, San Francisco, next door to our shop!

Having and maintaining a sketchbook practice has become a pivotal part of my personal painting practice. Part of what makes it such a great practice is that it is a place that I can play, make mistakes, work on new ideas and more. One of the things that is most helpful for me in drawing is to take myself on a drawing date somewhere- so, in this class we will have that drawing date together! It’s a field trip! It’s a workshop! It’s a journey!

In this adventure class I will meet with you at the Art Room and we will talk about different techniques- we will make viewfinders together, talk about framing an image and the how to draw from life in a way that feels true to us. Then we will walk down to the great highway to spend some time drawing those places and filling up many pages in our sketchbooks with different thumbnails/compositions.

Then we will return to the Art Room to take our thumbnails and expand them into a more stylized drawing using whatever materials you are excited about. This is part workshop, part journey, part drawing date. I will have some instructional sheets/worksheets for you to take home, we will discuss different methods for recording what you are seeing or filling a page and then I will be there with you to answer questions and talk about different aspects of keeping a sketchbook practice!

MATERIALS NEEDED
These are the supplies you'll need to bring for class—feel free to supplement this list with other options you love or have on hand!

  • Sketchbook - any one that you love!
  • Drawing tools a soft pencil (HB-2B or a blackwing classic), a felt tip pen, one or two colored pencils, a mechanical pencil- I like to keep it simple and focus on line and form but bring a few options so you can figure out what works best for you.
  • Eraser/sharpener
  • Sunscreen/sun protection
  • Snack/water
  • Comfortable clothing and shoes for moving and adventuring
  • **You are welcome to use whatever other materials you are excited about when we get back to the artroom for the last leg of our journey- we will stick to just graphite (pencils) on our adventure to focus on form and composition, but when we expand those drawings you could paint, draw, use collage, whatever speaks to you. You can also just use pencils for that as well! So think about that and bring whatever you need for that.

If you'd like to purchase supplies from our shop, you can order online and select in-store pickup, or shop in person before class. Shop hours are 11am-6pm daily; please plan ahead if you're picking up supplies! Instructors will not have access to the shop when we're closed.
