Friday, May 10, 2:00 - 3:30pm PT

This workshop will cover some watercolor basics as we pause to pay attention to what’s right in front of us. We’ll paint from life, working towards simple still life compositions of desktop or tabletop objects that you already have—a cup, a fruit, a plant or pencil. We will talk about shading options and work through compositional choices with sketches.

Painting from life presents endless opportunities for practicing close observation in relation to confident brushwork, for mixing and experimenting with colors, for blending, for working wet on wet and for using layering techniques. This session is less focused on precision, and more on cultivating open-ended curiosity and slowing down as we paint.

Join zoom 15 minutes early (1:45pm) for an informal meet and greet with the instructor and other class participants! Session instructions will begin promptly at 2:05pm PT so that everyone has plenty of time to join!

  • watercolor paints
  • mixing palette
  • water
  • paper towel/studio cloth
  • brushes (I will be using round brushes, one smaller and one larger)
  • watercolor paper
  • scrap for swatching
  • something to sketch on
  • pencil and eraser
  • 1-3 desktop objects
