This is an online workshop held via Zoom.

What if understanding how watercolor is made completely changed how you use it?

In this watercolor primer, CfM founder Alexis Joseph starts at the very beginning -- demonstrating how a batch of watercolor paint is made from pure pigment. Once you understand the material, everything else starts to click into place.

From there, we'll build together: color wheel, basic brush handling, color mixing, and a series of color charts where you'll practice creating gradations of tints and shades to keep as reference. By the end of class, you'll have a working toolkit -- and a much more intuitive relationship with your paints.

We'll close with one of Alexis's favorite techniques: color matching from source material using a viewfinder!

Walk away with the skills, the charts, and the curiosity to keep going.

Join Zoom 15 minutes early for an informal meet and greet with the instructor and class participants! Class will begin promptly at 5 minutes past the hour, so everyone has plenty of time to create!

SUGGESTED MATERIALS:

  • Watercolor paints – We recommend a mix of warm/cool/earth tones and a few brights or neons if you have them. Or if you'd like to use the exact set Alexis uses snag a Color Mixing Palette here! Please allow at least a week for delivery.
  • Watercolor paper
  • Brushes – we love Flat brushes for this exercise, but any will do! A flat 10 works great!
  • Hard pencil - 2H/3H
  • Erasers
  • Scissors or xacto knife to make a viewfinder (small piece of paper with a square cut out)
  • A magazine page or two with colors you like
  • Optional: Washi, Artist's, or Nichiban masking tape
