Saturday, May 17, 11:00am - 12:30pm PT
This is an online workshop held via Zoom.
Last year my dad and I stumbled across a Fairfield Porter exhibition at the Parrish Museum and I just fell in love with his paintings inspired by the evocative urban landscape of my home New York City. Known for his ability to capture the beauty and quiet charm of everyday urban scenes Porter’s work highlights the interplay between architecture, light, and nature within city environments. In this workshop, we will explore techniques that bring these elements to life using the fluidity of watercolour.
Through a series of step-by-step exercises, you will learn how to paint vibrant, yet serene urban scenes—whether it’s a street corner, your favourite restaurant, or a quiet moment in a public park. We will cover essential watercolor techniques, including layering, wet-on-wet, and blending, as well as how to depict the nuances of light, shadow, and the textures of urban surfaces. We will also learn explore how to simplify complex cityscapes while still conveying the energy and atmosphere of the urban environment, much like Porter’s work. Whether you are new to watercolor or have prior experience, this session offers an opportunity to refine your technique, build your skills in urban landscape painting, and draw inspiration from one of the 20th century's most revered American artists.
Join Zoom 15 minutes early for an informal meet and greet with the instructor and class participants! Class will begin promptly at 5 minutes past the hour, so everyone has plenty of time to create!
