CfM Payne's Grey

The first ever custom CfM blended color! Our lovely Payne's Grey is opaque, with an ultra smooth texture.  It contains a small amount of our natural pigment Carmine Naccarat, making it not completely lightfast.

It feels like every artist we talk to has at least one thing in common: a true love of Payne's Grey! The color's warmth and versatility draws us in and earns our total devotion. All shades of grey are composed of many hues, and our beloved Payne's Grey is no different—it’s made from mixing together a vivid blue, a rosy red, and an earthy yellow.

There are small variations in how others have mixed their Payne's Grey, with some using colors like Prussian Blue, Indigo, Rose Madder, and Raw Sienna. It's such a personal color in this way, which is one of the reasons it's so beautiful! We all have our own Payne's Grey-—some warmer, some cooler, more saturated, or more transparent. At the shop we decided to use three of our most favorite colors: Ultramarine Blue Light, Carmine Naccarat, and Italian Gold Ochre Light. We created our own pigment recipe, becoming artist-chemists, to find our perfect shade!

All of our watercolors are handmade in our shop using the highest quality earth and synthetic pigments, plus natural watercolor binding medium made from gum arabic (sap from acacia trees), honey, glycerine, distilled water, and a dash of clove oil for freshness!

Half Pans measure ~3/4" x 1/2" x 3/8" and contain ~2ml of paint.

Our custom blended colors don't have a Color Index number, as they consist of a unique blend of two or more pigments. All of our watercolors conform to ASTM D-4236.
