This single-day workshop offers an overview of how to make vivid artists colors from nature - from flowers, stems, leaves, branches, insects and earth, using processes that were common practice for millennia around the globe before the relatively recent invention of synthetic pigments. With an abundance of naturally derived materials available in the Bay Area, participants will learn about an array of local sources and approaches to make botanical inks, watercolors and lake pigments -essentially dried pigments made from plants that can be transformed into an array of mediums in the future. The age-old practices introduced in this class provide a path toward an environmentally-friendly way of working and also offers an enticing entrypoint into forming a deeper connection to the land where we live and work.
This short informative workshop covers:
- a brief history of pigments and how humans have used and created them across time
- the most successful sources with which to make saturated, vivid natural colors - how and where to find them, both locally and from reputable distributors
- the basics of making botanical inks, watercolors, and lake pigments.
Everyone will leave with a set of recipes, a list of book recommendations, info about the best sites for ongoing education and a set of color charts to take home that we'll paint during the class.
Please bring a watercolor notebook or journal for taking notes and making swatches! We will have the rest of the materials available for you to use during the class!
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Lena Wolff is an artist, craftswoman, independent teacher, and activist for democracy in equal parts. Her work extends out of American folk-art and quiltmaking traditions while at the same time being rooted in geometric abstraction, social practice, civic engagement, and feminist political art. Lena’s interconnected artistic output includes drawing, collage, sculpture, frequent collaboration, and public projects. Her work is in the permanent collections of ONE National Lesbian and Gay Archives, the Berkeley Art Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Oakland Museum of California, among others. She lives with her wife Miriam Klein Stahl and their daughter in Berkeley, California.

Workshop doors open 15 minutes early for all to arrive and get settled. Class will start promptly so everyone has plenty of time to create!
For public transit, both the #18 bus and the N-Judah muni lines stop just at the corner of our block. If you're driving, there is 1-hour parking along Judah St., and unmetered street parking in the surrounding neighborhood. We recommend building in extra time to park for evening and weekend classes!
