Naturalist Studies: Eggs & Feathers with Melanie Lan
Friday, April 28, 5:00 - 6:30pm PST
During my residency in Iceland I developed a fascination for arctic seabirds and their eggs. The abundance of speckles, the variations in size, and the beautiful markings on the eggs and feathers inspired me to observe nature more closely. This workshop is an introduction to naturalist illustration where we'll be practicing common watercolor techniques such as wet into wet, layering, glazing, and more. We'll be honing our technique and learning how to paint with precision!
Note: Watercolor Brushwork Basics or familiarity with watercolor is highly recommended but not required!
Join zoom 15 minutes early (4:45pm) for an informal meet and greet with the instructor and other class participants! Session instructions will begin promptly at 5:05pm PST so that everyone has plenty of time to join!
All your favorite colors! Various shades of neutrals and earth colors are lovely, but bright ones like fluorescent colors will work great too!
Brushes - the tiniest brush you have for details! Preferably a size 0 or 000. Have a couple larger brushes (2-8) for larger swatches.
Mixing palette or enamel tray (if you don't have a fancy mixing palette, a ceramic dish or plate also works!)
Extra paper for swatching colors and sketching on the side
Pencil + eraser
Optional: real egg shells and feathers would be wonderful to reference if you've got them, but absolutely not necessary! Reference photos will be provided!
