A couple of years ago, I discovered American textile artist and printmaker Anni Albers at a Bauhaus exhibit and was immediately drawn to her bold geometric patterns. When I returned home, I started painting her textile patterns on the discontinued CfM dot grid paper (and now CfM has graph paper too!). Drawing inspiration from weaving, I work row by row creating a sense of mediation and flow, using the negative and positive space on the grid to create a pattern.

Join zoom 15 minutes early (4:45pm) for an informal meet and greet with the instructor and other class participants! Session instructions will begin promptly at 5:05pm PST so that everyone has plenty of time to join!

  • Watercolor paint— at least 1 color that’s a rich color so you can get different shades by changing the water content (Anjelika loves Indigo, Cerulean, French Vermillion); optional: additional 2 paint colors if you have them

  • Watercolor paper: * In advance of class on 1 sheet draw a grid of about ½” square, or grab CfM ½” Graph Paper (you can also work “off the grid” if that feels more comfortable too) *

  • 2-3 scrap pieces of watercolor paper

  • Brushes (small brushes preferred), for example size 2 or 4 round

  • Pencil

  • Water

  • Paper towel

Anjelika found her love for CfM when she was on the hunt for the perfect watercolors to match the landscape of Death Valley and Mojave Desert back in 2019. She loves typography, design and color theory and draws inspiration from textiles, political posters, and patterns found in nature. She is a scientist, researcher, educator and policy wonk.
