The most precious blue! Composed of medium grade ground Lapis Lazuli from Chile, the color is a deep, rich blue; lightfast and semi-transparent with a lightly gritty texture when painting.
The natural form of Ultramarine, Lapis Lazuli is a composite mixture of limestone, silicate minerals, and pyrite containing the mineral lazurite. It was most expensive pigment in the Renaissance (more expensive than gold) due to its rare, remote mountain sources in Afghanistan and later, Chile, and the complex process of extracting the pure pigment from the mineral. Lapis was first used in 6th century Afghanistan, it was also extensively used in the illuminated manuscripts and Italian panel paintings.
All of our watercolors are non-toxic and handmade in our shop using the highest quality earth and synthetic pigments and natural watercolor binding medium made from gum arabic (sap from acacia trees), honey, glycerine and distilled water.
