Ghostly Patterned Printmaking with Rachel Cummings

In this class, we’ll be learning about the fundamentals of relief printing by carving simple stamps (with a spooky twist!) that we’ll use to build uniquely layered prints! We will get to know our carving tools and discuss essential linocutting techniques before creating our stamps.
As we carve, we’ll work on the consistency and confidence of our carving strokes. We’ll also learn stamp layering techniques that’ll help us create dynamic and expressive patterns!
When creating these prints, I encourage everyone to allow their instincts to guide them as they print their stamps and explore different mark making methods. This leaves us free to practice and explore in a casual low-pressure head space! There is truly no wrong way to approach the creation of these eccentric pieces, which is why they’ve become a staple in my sketchbooks.
My goal is for everyone to leave this class feeling comfortable with the carving process and more confident in their ability to employ the fundamentals that we’ll be learning. Additionally, I hope everyone finds the creative process as meditative and freeing as I do!
Join zoom 15 minutes early (4:45pm) for an informal meet and greet with the instructor and other class participants! Session instructions will begin promptly at 5:05pm PST so that everyone has plenty of time to join!
SUGGESTED MATERIALS
- Paper
- Watercolor - you can use as few or as many colors as you like
- Brush - I’ll be using a round 2 but any brush will work!
- Rubber Carving block
- Linocut carving tool
- Ink pad
- Scissors
- Optional : craft knife
ABOUT RACHEL
Rachel is an artist and educator based in San Francisco, CA. Her focuses are illustration and printmaking. All workshops are recorded and the replay will be automatically available the day after class to everyone who paid for a spot! The link to the recording will expire 30 days after the date of the session.
*Each class is currently capped at 40 people, but we will be offering 5 free spots per class to people with financial need. Email friends@caseformaking.com if you would like to request a spot. Free spots are first come, first serve.
