The quilts of Gee’s Bend are quilts made by Black women and their ancestors who live or have lived in the isolated area of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. Gee’s Bend is a tiny community of just about 700 people, and has an incredibly resilient history! The quilts made by the women there are thought of as some of the most important contributions to Black art in history, and in this class we will be using them as inspiration for our paintings. Join me in a class that combines history and painting, learning all about the story of the women of Gee’s Bend while creating quilt-inspired paintings of our own!

Join zoom 15 minutes early (4:45pm) for an informal meet and greet with the instructor and other class participants! Session instructions will begin promptly at 5:00pm PST so that everyone has plenty of time to join!

SUGGESTED MATERIALS:

  • Your watercolors!
  • Square watercolor paper
  • Tiny sheets of watercolor paper, about 2”x3”
  • 1-2 different sized flat brushes
  • 1 small round brush (for detailing)
  • (optional) black watercolor paper
