Pen and Ink: Black Magic with Gina Hendry
Friday, June 15, 5:00pm - 6:30pm PST
Marked and unmarked, negative and positive, 0 and 1. Let’s let this binary be our teacher as we explore an ancient and elusive medium: Drawing in black ink. Its stark contrast and endless textural possibilities make ink exciting and daunting at the same time. Fear not - there is so much to learn in its absolutes! This class will be an exercise in trusting your creative intuition, as well as your hands as an extension of your eyes and mind. We’ll experiment with different tools: brushes, pens, markers, and even our fingers. We’ll let go of the idea of revision and live moment to moment with expressive, indelible marks on our paper - a practice in mindfulness and radical acceptance. Something beautiful lurks in its dark, wonderful depths - let’s draw it out together.
Join zoom 15 minutes early (4:45pm) for an informal meet and greet with the instructor and other class participants! Session instructions will begin promptly at 5:05pm PST so that everyone has plenty of time to join!
Ink tools: this is a very broad category - stick with black ink for this class. Some loose suggestions:
bottled Sumi, India, acrylic, or calligraphy ink (black)
Brush pens, like the Kuretake 22 pen, Kuretake fudegokochi pens, or Sakura brand brush pens
Felt tipped pens (Sakura makes a great selection)
Any drawing, calligraphy, or writing pen with black ink (the wetter the better!)
Paint brushes of various sizes
Either a sketchbook or several sheets of smooth-ish paper, medium weight is best, but any will do.
Optional: Pencil, water cup, rag for smudging, a finger you don’t mind getting dirty
