Color Conversations from Memory and Reference with Alexis Joseph
Thursday, August 18, 5:00pm - 6:30pm PST
Color is everywhere and the way we perceive it is is unique to ourselves. This session aims to bring to the surface the way we talk to ourselves about the paint colors we see. We’ll use abstract artworks as reference and together make a color map of the composition with our own color notes on it for us to use as a guide to paint from.
This session is inspired by an exercise Alexis developed a few years ago, on a trip to Amsterdam. In the Abstract Expressionist room she noticed herself naming all the pigment colors she recognized and found herself really wanting to paint them. Knowing this is definitely not allowed in a museum setting she took out her sketchbook and drew herself a kind of paint by numbers map outlining the composition and color fields. Later that night, back at her Airbnb, she recreated the painting using her sketch and her memory of the colors in the source painting. Not only was it a valid exercise of studying color and composition from the masters but it also began an interesting dialogue about ways we talk about and name colors for ourselves which can help illuminate how we notice and differentiate hues and tints and shades and how to color match them from memory!
