Botanical Studies: California Poppies with Melanie Lan
Saturday, July 23, 11:00am - 12:30pm PST
One of the many things I miss about living in San Francisco are the vibrant California poppies! Their shape, color, and plentitude brings so much joy. In this session we’ll be using our observation skills to paint this beautiful flower in the style of old botanical studies, everything from the buds and blooms to the leaves and seed pods. We’ll learn how to color mix to find our preferred oranges, golds, and greens, and hopefully everyone will come away with a poppy portrait that brings them a little bit of sunshine.
Join zoom 15 minutes early (10:45am) for an informal meet and greet with the instructor and other class participants! Session instructions will begin promptly at 11:05am PST so that everyone has plenty of time to join!
Watercolor paints - primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) if you’d like to learn how to mix your own palette! Otherwise have various shades of yellows, oranges, and greens. If using CFM paints, I love Egg Yolk Yellow, Nicosia, French Pale Green, and CFM Poppy is a fun bonus color here but not at all necessary!
Brushes - one smaller for little details and one larger for the petals
Mixing palette or enamel tray (if you don't have a fancy mixing palette, a ceramic dish or plate also works!)
Extra paper for swatching colors and sketching on the side
Pencil + eraser
Optional: real live CA poppies would be wonderful to reference if you've got them, but absolutely not necessary! Reference photos will be provided!
