With an abundance of naturally derived materials available in the Bay Area, participants will learn about an array of local sources and approaches to make botanical inks, watercolors and lake pigments -essentially dried pigments made from plants that can be transformed into an array of mediums in the future. Her work extends out of American folk-art and quiltmaking traditions while at the same time being rooted in geometric abstraction, social practice, civic engagement, and feminist political art. Lena’s interconnected artistic output includes drawing, collage, sculpture, frequent collaboration, and public projects. Her work is in the permanent collections of ONE National Lesbian and Gay Archives, the Berkeley Art Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Oakland Museum of California, among others.
