Layered Landscapes with Benji Wall

We’ll encourage painters to approach color and form expressively and allow intuition to guide the hand as we move quickly across several different small works to create edge-to-edge fields of color as the base for stylized landscapes and unfussy botanical images.
We’ll use wet-on-wet and washes to become more comfortable working quickly across bigger expanses of the page and find new nuances by overlaying tones. After exploring technique to set up our canvases, we’ll select two to begin building our compositions and getting more comfortable with varying opacities.
Painters should leave with greater comfort in paint and water handling and hopefully gain inspiration to make bigger, looser work. Painters will also leave having tried creating a composition on the fly without working from a sketch.
Join zoom 15 minutes early (4:45pm) for an informal meet and greet with the instructor and other class participants! Session instructions will begin promptly at 5:05pm PT so that everyone has plenty of time to join!

ABOUT Benji
Benji Wall (he/him) is a queer multidisciplinary artist and designer living in Oakland, CA. After a stint in digital strategy and events marketing, he’s finally found a way to combine two life-long passions — plants and process art — in a botanically-driven watercolor and gouache practice. He’s slowly cataloging the amazing flora of the San Francisco Bay Area through this lens.
